Father’s Day Treat: Beer Candied Bacon!

Father’s Day is only a few sleeps away and if you are struggling to find that perfect gift for dad – here it is!
I introduce Beer Candied Bacon!

Its sweet, bacon-y and beer-y…. those aren’t even words but you get the idea. Its like heaven!

My husband is super fussy! He doesn’t eat fruit or very many vegetables which is so frustrating at times, especially with two kids in the house. But the thing that drives me insane come gift giving seasons, is he doesn’t eat sweet stuff! He used to, but these days he just doesn’t really like it (at times its great – more for me). So all those inexpensive chocolate gift ideas for Christmas, Birthdays, Easter and Father’s Day just don’t help. Thankfully he DOES like bacon… and beer…who doesn’t right?

After trawling through Pinterest for hours (literally!) trying to find awesome homemade gifts for men I came across this Beer Candied Bacon. It has been sitting on one of my boards for years waiting for me to try it out and finally I got all the ingredients together to give it a go.

Its actually very simple, although it does take a bit of time and lots of attention.

The recipe:

500g Streaky Bacon
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
1/4 Cup + 2 Tblspn Beer
What ever you want to use is fine. I got some DB Draught in a single bottle from the bottle store. My hubby normally drinks Steinlager which I didn’t really think would work for the bacon. I wanted something a little more robust.

Mix the brown sugar and beer together in a bowl or glass until the sugar dissolves slightly and makes a runny syrup

Arrange the bacon on a wire rack on a oven tray. They will have to overlap to start with but as they cook and shrink you will be able to give them a bit more room.

Bake the bacon at 200 C for 10 mintues. Remove from oven and brush on some glaze. Turn the bacon over and brush some more glaze on. Bake again for 10 minutes and repeat until you have used up the syrup. Give the bacon another 10 minutes approx. until it is golden and crispy.

(Mid way through the glazing process, watch those ends. They seem to cook faster than the rest)

allow to cool on a clean wire rack. You can leave to cool on the rack you baked the bacon on but it may stick and break the bacon when you try to peel it off. Allow the bacon to cool for 1 hour before serving – I know its hard but its worth it. Trust me.

Serve as a snack at your next shin dig and watch it disappear. Seriously, I would recommend making a double batch.
