10 Women From History Your Kids Should Recognise
Happy International Women’s Day. A day we can show our respect, appreciation, and love towards womankind in general. A day we can reflect upon the economic, political and social advancements women have achieved and are still striving for.
Below are my top ten inspiring women from history. Women, I believe, all kids should have some knowledge of, (or at least recognise), by the time they leave high school.
Can you name them in the picture above? Can your kids? If so what can they tell you about them?
In chronological order:
( From left to right, top to bottom in the picture).
1. Elizabeth I (1533 – 1603) Queen of England. Her reign brought a period of stability and enlightenment to England. She reigned without a husband. Something that required intelligence, charm and backbone in Tudor England.
2. Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797). When she suggested that men and women should be considered equal as rational beings, it was revolutionary to say the least. The publication of ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Woman’ in 1792 is considered one of the earliest examples of feminist philosophy.
3. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). Radically changed how nursing was perceived and practised while nursing wounded soldiers during the Crimean war. Her insistence on improving sanitary conditions is thought to have saved many lives.
4. Harriet Tubman (1820 – 1913) Born a slave, Tubman was the most famous member of the Underground Railroad, a network of safe houses used to transport runaway slaves to freedom. She rescued around seventy enslaved families and friends.
5. Katherine Wilson “Kate” Sheppard (1847 – 1934) was the most prominent member of New Zealand’s Women’s Suffrage Movement and was the country’s most famous suffragette. Since New Zealand was the first country to introduce universal suffrage in 1893, Sheppard’s work is admired globally.
6. Marie Curie (1867-1934) put women on the scientific map and won two Nobel Peace Prizes in 1903 and1911, despite being victim to sexism throughout her career.
7. Anne Frank (1929 – 1945). Author of “Anne Frank’s Diary.” Tragically a victim of the Holocaust, Anne’s diary is one of the world’s most widely known books today.
8. Rosa Parks (1913-2005) became a figurehead for the civil rights movement in the US when she refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on the Montgomery City bus.
9. Mother Teresa (1910-1997) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for tirelessly caring for those who had nobody to care for them.
10. Malala Yousafzai (1997- today). In 2012 she was shot three times in the head for speaking out about education for girls. She is now a figurehead of our time and a living inspiration to women everywhere.

Rodeo
Our rodeo field trip was awesome! We fed the chickens, collected the eggs, milked the cows, harvested the corn and tomatoes and drove a tractor. I got $2 for my hard work on the farm, which I spent at the grocery store on a fruit roll up. I came home with sunflower seeds, animal fact […] Continue reading

Giving Maisy a Chance
Maisy Goes to the Bookshop, Lucy Cousins
I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a big Maisy fan. I find the brights and bolds lend themselves well to a few subjects, but an anthropomorphic mouse and the style combined have never drawn me in. But April’s promo box from Walker contained “A Maisy First Experiences Book.” I gave it a fair shot. The girls thought it was nice, but they didn’t ask for it again…perhaps they detected my lack of enthusiasm. I think a risk with modelling / representing a first experience is that the things that aren’t universal jump out at you so quickly…such as how Maisy’s bookshop visit features an in-shop café (something not possibly in any bookshop in our city). Ivy is a fan of books with a narrative (rather than poems, lists, or rhymes for rhymes sake), so this ticks that box. If you’re already a Maisy fan, you’ll be delighted by this series, I’m sure (out April 1), but if you, like me, have never felt called to them previously this probably won’t change your tune either.
