Treasures of Darkness

“And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness – secret riches.” (Isaiah 45:3) Grief visited this week. It threw shadows across my path as family and friends grieved over the loss of loved ones. People were left with sadness, tears in their eyes and empty spaces in their homes. There really were no words to say. When hard […] Continue reading

{Sewn} Isabelle’s Art Deco Dress

Here in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay of New Zealand we celebrate an annual ‘Art Deco’ festival. This festival commemorating the 1931 Napier Earthquake in which 256 people lost their lives, and many of the damaged buildings were rebuilt in accordance with the distinctive ‘Art Deco’ style of the time – thus giving Napier a real Deco flavour that still lives on today.

The festival is a pretty big event in our community with a lot of people travelling to attend and many people dressing up. Our kids’ school does a dress up day too, and when I spotted this fabric in my local fabric store (Spotlight) I decided to sew Isabelle a dress!

Art Deco Isabelle

At some point during this blog post I had planned to make a hilarious joke about how I’d painstakingly stitched every sequin on, but unfortunately I’ve already revealed that I bought it like this from Spotlight, so that joke won’t fly! In fact, the whole sewing process was rather pain free – I just used my old staple, the Blank Tank pattern from Melly Sews, with a few modifications – the obviously one being that I lengthened it to be a dress and I also lined it with a soft grey marle cotton/lycra knit blend (because the back of the sequin fabric would have been a little itchy if left exposed against the skin.) Because I was sewing with sequined fabric (my first time), I used special needles called ‘sharps’ as recommended by my fabric store and a small zig zag stitch due to the stretchiness of the fabric.

The only trouble I encountered during the sew was trying to get my mind about how to line it and still be able to turn it in the right way. As the original pattern isn’t lined I had to work it out for myself and in the end I put the call out for advice in a couple of facebook sewing groups I belong to. From there the ‘Burrito roll method’ was suggested (as demonstrated by ) , but in the end I followed which gave the same end result. (All in all it was a very quick sew and I probably spent more time trying to get my head around this issue rather than anything else.)

Honestly, how gorgeous is this girl!? She shines with or with out sequins!

To complete the look, Isabelle and Pipi both made the flapper style headbands (with some assistance from me.) We just used stretchy black lace that I already had in my stash and tied it at the back and the girls attached the feathers and plastic jewels with the hot glue gun. They are big fans of the glue gun!

I would have got some photos of them making them, but I was too busy supervising two eager girls dealing with hot glue, so that didn’t happen!

Pipi, never one to be left out, decided she needed some photos as well – she’s not in full costume, but you get the picture… and I think these pics reflect her personality rather well!

No words!

I’ve been on a bit of a sewing kick recently, with heaps of things I want to sew (once I finish custom orders of course – nearly there!) … and also with a couple of unblogged projects/ works in progress that I hope to share with you soon!

Do you have any projects on the go/ in the pipeline?

Six Ways to Use Thyme

Thyme is a easily gown perennial which will thrive in a sunny spot with good drainage.

1. Infused Vinegar

Place a few sprigs of thyme in a glass bottle. Fill the bottle with white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar. Cap the bottle, then store in a cool, dark place for 6-8 weeks. The vinegar can be used as a base for salad dressing.

2. Hair Loss and Dandruff

I haven’t needed to try this one. To make a scalp treatment which is said to stimulate hair growth steep one generous handful of fresh thyme in a litre of boiling water for 15-20 minutes. Strain and cool. Massage into the scalp daily.
To help relieve dandruff symptoms steep one small handful each of fresh thyme and fresh rosemary in a litre of boiling water for 15-20  minutes. Use as above.

3. Digestion

Thyme is said to help the body digest fatty foods. Add a few sprigs of thyme to the roasting pan or casserole dish when cooking fatty meat.

4. In the Garden

Thyme will bring bees into the garden, but will also help to deter moths and some flying insects.

5.  Mouthwash

When making toothpaste or mouthwash at home add a few drops of thyme (thymus vulgaris) essential oil. Thyme is antiseptic and is an ingredient in some commercially produced mouth washes.

6. Cinnamon Thyme Sore Throat Tea

Place 2 teaspoons of dried thyme and one cinnamon stick into a small teapot. Pour 2 cups of boiling water into the pot to cover the herbs. Allow to steep for 6-8 minutes (you can adjust the steeping time depending on how strong you like your tea).
Pour into a tea cup or mug through a strainer. Sweeten to taste with honey.
Makes 2 cups. Drinking two or 3 cups a day may help to relieve cold symptoms.

DIY Your Own Tea Cup Candle Holder…

The Tea Cup Candle Holder is the quickest DIY ever.
It takes just five minutes to put together.
And after 24 hours glue drying time is ready to use or gift!

Take one pretty teacup…
I used a Maxwell and Williams cup and saucer set,
from Farmers purchased for $7.50 at half price.
But you can use vintage cups and saucers matched or mismatched for a more delicate pretty look.

You’ll also need a ball candle.
This one was just $2 from Briscoes sale.

Using a ceramic or bonds anything glue,
put a large dollop on the base of the cup.

Centre the saucer onto the upturned cup and glue.

Leave 24 hours for glue to dry.
Then place the ball candle on the saucer.

 How quirky is that?
Plus that saucer catches all the wax drips.

Light and enjoy
or
gift to someone else.

Our Top Tips for Starting Solids with Twins

Starting solids is one of those great milestones in your twin babies lives. It takes them from babies into little people that suddenly have likes and dislikes.

One of the best things you can do before you start down the path to trying solids with your little ones is to get prepared as much as you can – mentally and physically.

Suddenly a whole lot of new things are added into your already busy day, which when you have twins, is full enough already.

If you’re like me and want to prepare your own foods, there is the food prep time plus it is MESSY x 2 which adds more cleaning and washing – see what I mean by mentally ready?? ;)

First, you have to know that they are ready – and they may be ready at different ages.

They should be:

  • Around six months of age (adjusted age) to ensure their digestive system is developed enough to process the food.
  • Able to support their head and neck well
  • Interested in watching you eat – reaching out for the food or make open mouth or chewing movements while you’re eating.
  • Seem hungry after their milk feeds or demanding milk more often
  • When you offer a spoon, they open their mouth and don’t push their tongue forwards and push the food out.

Remember these milestones may happen at different times for each twin.

Milk is still the most important food for growth and development until your babies are 8-9 months old so it is important that you give them milk first, solid food second, to ensure they are getting all the nutritional elements they require from their milk before filling up on other food. Once they get to around 8 months you can swap it to food first, milk second.

Getting prepared – things to think about

You will need:

Food preparation

A vegetable steamer
– steaming the vegetables and fruit will minimise the nutrient loss and maximise the flavour. Just ensure they are cooked to a soft texture that will puree to a completely smooth consistency.

A stick blender
that will create completely smooth purees

Ice trays
– LOTS – you can batch make your purees and then freeze them. Makes life much easier.

A great
baby weaning book for ideas such as Annabel Karmel’s Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner.

Baby spoons and bowls /
Twin Feeding Set

Mess Minimising

Bibs
– large is better. I loved the Cotton On ones.

Washcloths
to wipe faces and hands and arms and hair and…….

Cloth Nappies
to go everywhere bibs don’t reach

Baby Wipes
to quickly clean the wall/floor/ceiling from food splatters

A large fabric style
shower curtain that can be placed under the two highchairs. After each meal you can pick it up with all the crumbs/food splatter and shake it outside for the birds and at the end of each day just throw it in the washing machine. No need to get down and scrub floors or floor mats.

A
bucket with napisan and water in it so you can quickly put any soiled clothes/cloths in it. Pear and banana are seriously bad for staining clothes so get them soaking as soon as possible.

You will start having lots of clothes changes in a day – a good excuse for
more baby clothes shopping 

During the warmer months –
feed them outside. Far less stressful! I think the bird population doubled around my house when my girls were little. They were the best fed birds in the neighbourhood!

Highchairs

To start with your babies may be too small to sit in a highchair safely and comfortably so you will want something to sit them in such as a Bumbo on the floor/
Twin Z Pillow etc). They need to be sitting upright to avoid choking.

When looking for highchairs some things to think about are:

Narrow foot base
– you will have TWO of these monstrosities taking up your kitchen/dining/lounge for a good year so don’t go for highchairs that have a really wide foot base as they just take up more room. It is also easier to have your twins sitting as close to each other as possible to minimise mess and for ease of feeding.

Minimal corners/edges/seams
– baby food goes EVERYWHERE so the more nooks and cranny’s you have in your highchair – the longer it will take to get that spag bol cleaned up. And remember you have TWO to clean.

Easy to wash
– the best ones are the chairs you can hose down or chuck in the shower.

First Foods

Great first foods are steamed and pureed to smooth carrots, sweet potato and parsnip and apple, pear and banana. If you are concerned about possible allergies then stick to one food at a time for three days to evaluate if there are any digestive upsets before introducing a new food.

You can then start introducing new foods every few days and start to offer combinations such as pear and banana, pumpkin and carrot.

There are LOTS of great websites and books on starting solids so spend some time with Mr Google before you get started so you have a bit of a game plan.

3 “sweet” ideas with Gerry’s Wraps

I found Gerry’s Gluten free wraps a while ago and have been eating them ever since! They are convenient, keep really well, and are super versatile.I use the large ones as pizza bases, the medium sized ones as wraps for lunches and the minis I use when having Mexican dishes, to wrap up a sausage in or for snacks :)Without going into too much detail I have trouble digesting a variety of things such as fruit, high lactose foods such as milk and wheat based foods. It is annoying and I’m not gonna Continue reading
