Book Review :: The Land of Nod

The Land of Nod – Robert Louis Stevenson & Robert Hunter

Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic children’s poem about dreamland, as narrated by a convalescing young boy, is given new life in this wonderfully illustrated book. Accompanied by Robert Hunter’s bold and beautiful illustrations, this picture book will bring the beloved Scottish author’s work to a whole new generation of young readers.”

If you haven’t come across this pretty book, you’re in for a treat.  If you consider children’s books a treat, that is… I do… The illustrations are soooooo lovely!  The Land of Nod is printed on matte pages, with a simple colour palette that is spot on.  Largely blues and pinks, with a smattering of other soft hues.  Very dreamy indeed.  The discerning toddler will love spotting familiar items in the dream scenes, lifted from earlier pages in the book.

The text is short, but a great way to introduce/include a little poetry in your daily routine.  Slow reading is good for this one, further emphasising that dreamy tone (and hopefully priming the scene nicely for sleep).  You’ll want to spend a little time on each illustration anyway, so #perfect.

The Land of Nod is available now, RRP $27.99, so keep an eye out in for it.

Book Review: Lexicon by Max Barry

A thrilling novel has to have the right balance of plausibility. If it tips too far in either direction, the thrill is replaced with either revulsion or ridicule. Too much plausibility, and it becomes a novelisation of horrific evening news reports. (I don’t know anyone who watches those for entertainment.) Not enough plausibility, and it […] Continue reading

Comment on FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY Copycats and social media. by Simone Graham

To me out and out copying just shows a complete lack of originality and creativity. Inspiration is a totally different thing, IMHO, and quite often credited with something like: “I was inspired the other by XXX’s Blog post on XYZ and it got me thinking…” and a link. Or some such thing.
It’s sad and rude and just ugh.
Copycats who just keep copying can’t keep it up – they aren’t using their true voice, and eventually people will figure them out. You just keep being you – you’ve done an amazing job on your blog Lisa – I remember when you first began and you’ve come SO FAR in both your writing and your content – I really enjoy your blog posts. x Continue reading

Wolfram Eberhard and the willow tree

Image may contain: tree, sky, plant, outdoor and nature

My Dad was bilingual. He told me a story involving a non bilingual person who named his house something like the Willow Villa. Dad said the Chinese educated people laughed until their teeth dropped.
In the Chinese beliefs,a house of willow means a brothel. I finally found out the following.

Dictionary of Chinese Symbols: Hidden Symbols in Chinese Life and Thought (Routledge Dictionaries) Revised ed. Edition

by Wolfram Eberhard
Wolfgang Eberhard’s Dictionary of Chinese Symbols:

The willow, much valued as firewood, is a symbol of spring. As spring is the season
of erotic awakenings, the phrase ‘willow feelings and flower wishes’ means sexual
desire; ‘looking for flowers and buying willows’ means visiting a prostitute, ‘flowers and
willows by the wayside’ are prostitutes, and ‘sleeping among flowers and reposing
beneath willows’ is a term for visiting a brothel.
The waist of a beautiful woman is compared to the willow, her eyebrows to
the curve of willow leaves. A young girl is a ‘tender willow and fresh flower’ while
a woman who can no longer claim virginal freshness is described as ‘faded willow and
withered flower’. A woman’s pubic hair is ‘in the depths of willow shade’. Continue reading
